Introductory ArcGIS

Using data of Arsenic concentrations in the groundwater of New Jersey that you obtain from the USGS website, as well as ArcGIS shapefiles obtained from the NJDEP GIS website, perform a spatiotemporal exploratory analysis that describes the space/time variability of the data in the 2000-present time period. Note that the USGS website classifies Arsenic with the inorganic minor nonmetals. Write a short report describing as succinctly and precisely as possible that space/time variability with the aid of a high quality graphics that portrays well the spatial and temporal trends in the data. To aid you in this task, you are advised to create an ArcGIS layout sheet as follow: 

 

Make a large data frame view showing the state boundary, the river network and watershed boundaries, and any other features you think informative.  Using graduated colors (i.e. colored markers) show at the location of each arsenic sampling well a concentration representative of the 2000- present time period. Then use a series of small data frame views with maps showing, using graduated colors, the groundwater Arsenic concentrations for different years. Add legend(s) as necessary so the layout view is self-explanatory.

 

Use “Summarize” to calculate the yearly mean and standard deviation of the standard pollutant.  Make sure that your report says what is the year that had the highest mean concentration, and the highest mean+standard deviation.

 

Submit electronically to the instructor a word document showing your maps and plots in Figures (use Figure numbers and Figure caption as in the papers assigned for reading in this class), preceded with an abstract (1/2 page max) explaining concisely but precisely what the document is showing.  You will be graded on the quality of the write up, the quality of the figures, and on how well and how fully you describe (1) the spatial variability in the data for the 2000-present time period, (2) how that spatial variability changes for each year, and (3) what are overall time trends in the data. The shorter report with the most succinct figures describing fully the space/time variability will earn the best grade. The name of the document should be yourfirstname_yourlastname_hwk1_part3.doc.
