The Spatial Database of Swine Sprayfields in North Carolina

Version 1.0 for Duplin County

Primary developer and contact person: Elizabeth C. Christenson

The Spatial Database of Swine Sprayfields in North Carolina is a database containing spatial information about the sprayfields of swine concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) across the State of North Carolina. Version 1.0 of this database contains information for Duplin County. This database was developed as part of a study calculating nutrient parameters for swine CAFOs at the sprayfield and sub-watershed scales.

Abstract. North Carolina (NC) regulates swine concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) using five-year nutrient management plans (NMPs) based on their having balanced plant available nitrogen (PANbal).  PANbal regulation theoretically ensures that nutrients in liquid manure effluent from swine are not over-sprayed onto crops.  Objectives of this research are first to characterize Duplin County sprayfields and PANbal.  In doing so, a review of all NMP permits in Duplin County was conducted and the first, open-source sprayfield spatial database created for swine CAFOs in NC (for Duplin County).  The review found that Duplin County has 24,528 permitted sprayfield acres receiving almost two billion gallons of swine effluent annually.  Second, this paper quantifies the difference in PANbal between CAFO point and sprayfield locations aggregated at two sub-watershed scales and shows that sprayfields location changes half of sub-watersheds by 25% of their PANbal. Third, a new method disaggregates NMP PANbal annually using remote sensing crop data.  And finally, probability that sprayfields have excess PANbal is estimated.  This work quantifies the impact of crop rotations on changes in PANbal on sprayfields and also highlights some of the limitations of NMPís estimation of PANbal recommending that NMPs be permitted based on the most nutrient-limiting crop rotation scenario.

Digitized Nutrient Management Plans

Version 1.0 of the Spatial Database of Swine Sprayfields in North Carolina was constructed using data contained in Nutrient Management Plans (NMPs), which are required by every swine CAFOs. Digitized versions of the NMPs for Duplin county are available at UNCís Carolina Digital Repository by searching for Elizabeth Christensonís Masters thesis for CAFOs Nutrient Management Plans.

Data in visual form.

One way to look at the database is through visualization . If this does not work then copy try to copy the link below in your browser:

The visualization displays a searchable map (e.g. Figure 1) where the user can see sprayfields by searching for a road or town in Duplin county (e.g. Magnolia, NC or Watson Rd, Duplin):
